What It Really Takes to Build a Thriving Freelance Paralegal Business

Scroll through legal Facebook groups like Paralegals Connect or its subgroup Virtual.FreelanceParalegalsConnect, and questions like this pop up every week:

"I am looking into becoming a freelance paralegal, but no clue where to start. I have personal injury experience... Any tips on how to get started?"

"Attention experienced contract/freelance paralegals! 📣 I need your origin stories... I have about 30 extra hours a week... My goal isn’t to launch a formal business... I just want to jump straight into project-based work..."

My response almost every time....

When responding to these posts, my message is always grounded in experience and encouragement:

"I have been freelancing and operating a business since 1990. My best advice is to take it one day at a time and hire a coach familiar with the journey. By hiring a coach, you are holding yourself accountable and you will always have someone beside yourself that is invested in your success. In the meantime, the history and a brief overview of my journey is on my website at
Best Virtual Paralegal. We also rolled out a new timeline this year! My team and I do offer coaching to help paralegals launch their freelance/1099 career..."

The Heart Behind the Journey: Why Do You Want to Freelance?

More Real conversations

Let me be completely clear: I love this industry, and I love seeing paralegals succeed. Freelancing is deeply rewarding, but it is not a quick fix.

Freelancing shouldn't be treated as a shortcut to gain entry-level experience, a quick stopgap for unemployment, or simply a way to work in your pajamas. True freelancing is about passion and purpose. Successful freelance paralegals step into this space because they genuinely want to innovate how legal services are delivered—helping attorneys build modern, efficient ways to provide legal support to the people and communities that need it most.

 Essential Diagnostic Steps

  • Evaluate Your Purpose: Ask yourself if your drive comes from wanting to run a business and transform legal support delivery, rather than just seeking remote work or quick income.
  • Audit Your Core Competencies: Ensure you already possess strong, independent legal skills. Freelancing is for applying established expertise, not learning basic paralegal duties on a client's dime.
  • Assess Your Willingness to Invest: Determine if you are ready to treat your venture like a real company by committing real capital toward legal setup, proper software, and professional training.
  • Explore Free Educational Foundations: Before taking the leap, explore curated educational resources to understand the operational side of running a legal practice. You can start with our free guides on the  Freelance Paralegal Info Hub

The "Pick Your Brain" Reality Check

Because freelancing is a serious business venture, relying solely on free advice or expecting established owners to train you in group comments isn't realistic—and honestly, expecting experienced freelancers to give away their business blueprints for free isn't very professional. As you can see from the conversations in these groups, most successful freelancers are happy to share general tips; however, expecting them to provide comprehensive business blueprints at no cost is unrealistic. We are always willing to share our expertise, but we shouldn’t be expected to give away the cow and the milk for free.

I was reminded of this dynamic during a call to my office:

Caller: "Hi, I was wondering if I could pick your brain."

Me: "I’m happy to help pickers—for a price. My advice and experience are how I make a living. I can ask you a few questions to see if you’d benefit from my assistance and provide a customized rate. Sound good?"

Caller: "I follow you and your company on socials. I already get all your free content, but I have specific questions! Why won’t anyone just answer my questions about how to start freelancing? I don’t know what to do!"

Me: "Well, that’s easy... nobody works for free. If you offer to pay people for their expertise, you’re much more likely to get the answers you seek. Freelancing is hard work. It’s running a business, finding opportunities, and doing the actual work once you land a client. People generally don’t want to train their competition, let alone do it for free. When you ask to 'pick my brain,' you're asking me to do both."

Bridging Community Wisdom with Custom Coaching

Asking questions in social media groups is a wonderful way to network, gather general feedback, and stay connected with peer communities. But while group comments can offer great context, they cannot build your specific operational structure, draft your service agreements, or guide your growth strategy.

When you combine the general insight of community groups with the targeted support of a dedicated business coach, you set yourself up for lasting success.
