Burnout and Change

Burnout and change go hand in hand for most professionals. As discussed in the article “ Career Burnout ,” burnout can affect anyone at any time for various reasons. And unfortunately, burnout is on the rise in this pandemic era we live in. What triggers your burnout, and what you can do about it work together. It is hard work; it is personal and eye-opening work. Some professionals can buy self-help books and other retail store aid to overcome burnout. Other people need more support than what books can provide.

Burnout suffers who elect to work with either a mentor or a coach do so because they need or desire an accountability partner. Any time you are in a rut, even if it is temporary, having an accountability partner may be just what you need. A coach or mentor can help burnout suffers:

  • Assess the situation
  • Stay committed to change, and
  • Decide what to do next.

Staying committed to change is the most challenging aspect of burnout. An accountability partner is often a peer or other professional who has been there. Other times, accountability partners are mentors and coaches experienced in helping people change their mindset so that results are most likely achieved. Burnout cannot be overcome without commitment to doing something about it. Change is inevitable. Life is full of changes. The most effective and positive changes in life happen when you choose to change. Committing to change shouldn’t be as hard as it, but it is a struggle for many people. Think of change as taking power back over your life. You may be thinking, “if I am burnt out, then wouldn’t it be impossible to take power back?” Therefore, you must commit to doing it.

How to Commit to Change

How to commit to change is shifting our mindset from thinking of an idea to put that idea into action. Mindset shifting is the power behind committing to change. People have a habit of getting in their own way. People procrastinate and put things off, setting themselves up for failure, and they let self-doubt set in.
Usually, when people have something they want to achieve, there are two parts, the hard work to get to the second part, the “results.” If we’re honest, if it is something we truly want, there is no aspect of the journey we’re unwilling to do for the result. Unfortunately, for most people, burnout doesn’t always work out that way. There may be aspects of the process they don’t care for, but they do it anyway because the results far outweigh the sacrifice and hard work.
When people struggle with committing to a goal and struggle with seeing the goal through to completion, nine times out of 10, it is due to inner conflict. Therefore, what people really should be asking is how to deal with ambivalence? How do people deal with “I want, and I don’t want so that the I don’t want” doesn’t stop them from being their best selves? That’s right, they commit! It is that simple people do what it takes to find the motivation, or they don’t.

With that said, this does not mean it’s all hard or all easy, it’s neither, and it’s both. What’s helps is to reduce the effort required to meet the short-term objectives without making people feel bad. Bottom line, if something deeply matters to people, that’s reason enough to pursue it. And they typically do it.

Remember: Burnout isn’t Always Depression

Remember, burnout does not always appear as painful as Depression warranting seeking treatment from a doctor. Although if your symptoms are severe enough, I urge you to seek emergency medical attention, I am not stating anything to the contrary. Sometimes, the best treatment for burnout is realigning your values and increasing the reward to achieve what is important to you.
